Twelve Days of X’mas: Day V ~ Entropy in the Universe

Homura and Madoka Christmas!

On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love for anime gave me…
5 magical girls
4 unusual penguins
3 bright stars
2 adorable flowers
And a charming idol.

Well, of course Puella Magi Madoka Magica would find its way into these Twelve Days of X’mas! After all, in the spring of 2011, Shinbo Akiyuki blew everyone away with his very own original magical girl series that was anything but normal. This series has had a great deal of special moments, and I consider them to be some of the great anime moments of the year. But, it would be no fair to include all these moments into separate posts, and so I decided to put some of these moments into one post for Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

A tribute to Mami.

The first moment that shook and threw me off was the gruesome beheading of Tomoe Mami. What was shocking about this moment was not the cruelty of this moment, but the fact that it happened so suddenly and early in the series. This scene became infamous for its sudden shock, and I have to admit that it was one of the top moments of anime for me this year (and one of the most surprising!).

Kyouko and Sayaka. A fine couple.

Another moment was the unfortunate breakdown of Miki Sayaka, who happens to be another favorite character of mine. Faced with the revelation that her body and soul have been separated and the prospect of having her crush taken by her best friend, Sayaka fell to her own despair and became a witch. Madoka and Kyouko tries to save her, but it is all for naught, and in the end, Kyouko sacrifices herself along with Sayaka. The loss of another two magical girls really impresses upon you that this series is not your ordinary, cutesy magical girl series; it is a much darker series.

The Goddess watches over the puella magi.

There were also other worthy moments as well, such as Homura’s amazing barrage against the Walpurgis, and Madoka’s final wish for hope. All these moments alone, not to mention the characters themselves (especially Kyubey), have made Puella Magi Madoka Magica a hotly debated and extremely popular topic for anime fans this year, and for good reason!

Madoka christmas!

Sayaka and Kyouko christmas!

Puella Magi Madoka Magica weaves a dark story that culminated in a cathartic shining ray of hope, and I do believe that its story has surely cemented this series’s place in anime history along with the likes of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

  1. Where are you getting all these images, they’re so beautiful.

I think when it comes to 2011 the biggest name and the one to remember is really Madoka. I understand that other epic series likes Penguindrum are still airing but Madoka really gave the biggest impression especially it started on the beginning of the year.

    • I grabbed most of these images from imageboards, such as zerochan, oreno, konachan, etc. I did quite a bit of searching beforehand. ^_^

I also agree, and I do think that Madoka attracted a bigger audience than Mawaru Penguindrum as well due to its Internet fame. Plus it had all the time after its end to gather steam!

  2. I have fond memories over Madoka! I watched the first 5 or so over Skype and man was it a blast, I love shows that get people talking and this was one of them.

Fav character of mine definitely Kyouko ! She is just so awesome 😉

    • Cool! I’m going to have to try watching a series together with SCCSAV later on.

My favorite character would be either Sayaka or Kyouko, but that’s mostly because of the strong yuri vibes from them. 😉

  3. Madoka is definitely deserving of being mentioned in everyone’s 12 days of christmas lists, it was the most talked-about anime of the year after all.
