Ephemeral Dreams was born on April 02, 2011. This name came about due to my fleeting thoughts and fantasies from my hobbies, anime and manga. Ephemeral Dreams also has a sister blog, Ephemeral Curiosity (Ah, forget it. It’s dead now. I’m just leaving the link there so you can see what a horrible job I did on my first blog. Go to my Flickr instead for travel and photos.), that focuses on my other hobbies, travel and photography, and my lifestyle.
What you should know about me:
- I’m deaf. I have severe-to-profound deafness. Contrary to popular belief, deaf people are NOT debilitated. We are capable of doing anything; just not the ones that would involve listening. I have been wearing hearing aids my entire life, and that hasn’t impacted my interest in music (J-pop, classical). I can speak quite well and I am a proficient signer of ASL (American Sign Language). I do not think that my loss of hearing will impact my interest in anime at all, since I am able to hear with my hearing aids (or I could choose to watch subs without my hearing aids.) Either way, I am certainly one unique anime blogger from a whole different kind of world. Here’s my history of how I first got started in anime and manga, and for those of you wanting to know more about me, here’s my 50 Questions post about me.
- I can pretty much watch any kind of anime genre from romance to horror to sci-fi. I can also read any kind of manga, but my particular favorite genre has been yuri.
- I am a big fan of Miyazaki Hayao’s, Shinkai Makoto’s, Key, and TYPE-MOON works. Enough said.

Now, about my blogging style. As suggested by my persona, Ephemeral Dreamer, my style tends to fluctuate quite a bit, with some themes merely fleeting or ever-lasting. Of course, that is the nature of dreams, and I do think that my name will fit my style. So, don’t be quite surprised if I suddenly seem to go off track with some posts!

Being deaf certainly makes you a unique blogger. I actually took two years of ASL in high school, but unfortunately not using it on a daily basis made me forget it over the years. Now I only remember a few signs and how to finger spell. I also noticed that a few of the deaf students at my school, as well as one of the teachers, liked anime ^_^ Maybe because anime is such an intensely visual medium (with subtitles available 90% of the time) it’s not difficult at all for deaf people to get into it too.
Anyway, keep up the good work on your blog. And I’ll send you a friend request on MAL if that’s okay~

I have yet to meet any other deaf people who likes anime, but then again, I haven’t really been trying, I suppose, out of fear of what they would think of me. It’s great to hear from you that there are other deaf people who also like anime! I do agree that anime is an intense visual medium and has plenty of subtitles, and if you’ve read my history post already, it was also how I got into anime. ^_^

I’ve always been awed (or perhaps humbled would be more accurate) by the blind and the deaf. Because I have such little interaction with them, however, I’ve always (subconsciously, mind you) felt like they existed in a world separate from my own. Your blog was a very nice and refreshing reminder to me that these people do exist, and they’re capable of communicating and experiencing as much as I can. So thank you for that.
Also, separate from that, very nice blog! You’ve got a very unique style (in a good way), and I like your layout.
I also feel like there are two distinct worlds, one of hearing and one of deaf, more so because there is a Deaf culture (note the capital D). Deaf people are just like regular people; the only difference is communication, and even then, there are ways of circumnavigating this barrier. I could go on just talking about Deaf culture, but I’ll just say that I’m quite fortunate enough to be in both worlds and establish a small link between them through this blog or online. ^_^
