Nisemonogatari 02 ~ Eroticism and Smut (May Be Mildly NSFW)

Kanbaru.

Ok, so this is a first for me in which I write about something rather not quite so safe for work: eroticism and smut. To be put simply, the latest episode of Nisemonogatari was chock-full of smut and eroticism.

First, before I go into depth, I’d like to clarify one thing about smut and eroticism. Smut is more of a “softcore” pornography if I’m not mistaken, and eroticism is not pornography itself. Pornography is the use of explicit portrayal of sexual subjects to stimulate sexual arousal, whereas eroticism is about the aesthetics and philosophy of the state of sexual arousal.

On the bed only?

It IS getting hot in here, isn't it?

King's Game.

A small example of smut.

Implying sadism or masochism.

Implying that she was prepared to go far.

Implying that she was prepared to go far.

There were two sections in this episode of Nisemonogatari that got me thinking that, while they may have the same lewd atmosphere, they were both different. Nadeko’s scenes with Koyomi involved Nadeko attempting to show her affection for Koyomi through the use of games that has long been known to generate a steamy atmosphere, such as King’s Game and even using seemingly innocent games, Twister, to foster a more appropriate mood. In playing these games, she is sending subtle lewd hints toward Koyomi. These scenes were seemingly more pornographic, as Nadeko just want to win Koyomi’s affection and get with him.

Kanbaru's phone conversation with Koyomi.

Getting naked is courtesy? I'm fine with that.

No matter what I may wear or don't,

that's a decision for me, and no one else.

Kanbaru’s scenes were different in mindset, however. These scenes were more erotic and less pornographic than Nadeko’s scenes. Kanbaru isn’t quite in love with Koyomi this time though. The dialogues in these scenes were purely more about nudity and whatnot. Kanbaru is the kind of girl who loves to show off, I would think, and she doesn’t feel any shame in stripping and showing her bare (admittedly very sexy) body to Koyomi.

Kanbaru depressed after being seen by her grandmother.

Those are nice legs and feet...

So this is who Kanbaru is, eh?

Laid bare for all to see.

Here, Koyomi is the voice of reason here, and between himself and Kanbaru, we get to hear two sides of mindset: one of common sense and one of pure freedom from societal thinking. And then while cleaning up all the yaoi books, Koyomi finds Kanbaru’s weak point: by proclaiming that Kanbaru isn’t as big of a pervert as she thought she was. Kanbaru prides herself on being an erotic girl and an attacker, and she’s surprisingly weak when the attack is turned back on her. There’s a term for this kind of person, but I cannot, for the life of me, recall what it is. Nevertheless, I found this episode rather fascinating with regard to the tantalizing atmosphere generated from two characters with different motives.

Koyomi goes on the attack!

That is true.

You're really enjoying this, aren't you?

Oh, wow. You're on a roll.

A blow to Kanbaru!

Can't take it after all, huh?

Kanbaru attempting to regain her composure.

A vain attempt to show that she has even more hardcore BL books.

Ok, now you're asking for it.

… I cannot believe I just wrote a post on eroticism and smut on impulse just from watching Nisemonogatari.

  1. It’s a common theme for harem series to have each character focus on one specific style of sexuality. Episodes like this just reaffirm my idea that the series is a cross between a harem anime and an absurdist play.

And don’t worry, I think everyone writes a post like this every now and then. You’ve seen some of the images I use for my posts, right?

    • Hmm, then I wonder what Hachikuji’s style of sexuality would be like? Would be hard to say so… Senjougahara obviously has a very aggressive style of sexuality, and as for Hanekawa, I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how she turns out in this series.

Yeah, I suppose I shouldn’t mind writing these kind of posts nowadays. ^_^

  2. I tell ya what dood, here are my thoughts on this week’s episode:
I was entertained, but felt unfulfilled by the end.
-The introduction of the Fire Sisters had me pumped because they are who I REALLY want to see.
-Sengoku was the best part of this episode. The whole thing.
-2nd best part was Kanade’s debut in the season.
-Kanbaru’s hot. With that out of the way I didn’t enjoy the fact she became another one of Araragi’s groupies. Her punishing Araragi for teasing her yaoi fandom was bittersweet to say the least. Seriously, why did she overreact? I didn’t get it.

To sum it up, I want more Fire Sisters. Thankfully there are only two more members of Araragi’s harem to visit: Megane and vampire shorty. Hopefully then no more Araragi fanclub for a while.
Well, there is a bright side to all this, Araragi is not Adam Sandler.

    • I wanted to see the Fire Sisters in action as well, but the appearance of Kanbaru and Nadeko softened the blow, ahaha.

I think it’s Kanbaru’s own kind of personality where she’s very prideful and unyielding, and she probably never experienced this kind of backfire before, so she overreacted. That’s what I think.

I’m particularly looking forward to seeing how Hanekawa turns out. Then hopefully more Fire Sisters action! ^_^

  3. Woooo! First off that opening? Holy cow so amazing! I just love how colorful and eye catching it is…and of course sexy character designs? They are just amazing to look at…yeah very erotic themed episode this time and wow Araragi has it rough! Lots of temptation around him with girls like Kanbaru and Nadeko throwing themselves at him! Well Kanbaru just likes to screw with Araragi’s mind 90% of the time.

Out of these two girls I have to say Kanbaru is still my favorite! She is a lot of fun and I always laugh when she interacts with Araragi ❤

    • I love this opening as well! It’s so Shaft-esque as expected. My top favorite -monogatari OP is still Hanekawa’s OP (the animated version) though. ^_^

And as I’ve said this to you before on Twitter, Kanbaru is easily my top favorite character but she faces strong competition from Senjougahara. ❤

  4. Kanbaru is always such a refreshing flame, I really enjoy her teasing and demeanour. Sengoku was the bit unexpected present of the series… she wanting to do ecchi things with Koyomi? But it got handled very good, I wouldn’t go as far as to label it pornographic…since it’s not explicit but suggestive (and Koyomi is always so naive =.= I really don’t like this man). Smut is quite explicit in itself but is more sensual than horny. Smutty are usually labeled shoujo titles that include sex – a very romantic most of the times. And no sex organs either – the couple is shown as a whole and the emphasis lies on the emotions.

    • Sengoku’s personality change was really unexpected as well for me, but I suppose that I shouldn’t be too surprised seeing how her crush, Araragi, saved her from her curse. I wouldn’t call it pornographic as well, but it’s so very dangerously close to the border, and it’s rather amazing how its suggestiveness could make it seem like so.

the couple is shown as a whole and the emphasis lies on the emotions.

That’s pretty much how much this episode went. ^_^

  5. I wonder what they will do with the Blu-ray release… Remove those censoring or not…:D

  7. I actually thought the reverse, that Nadeko’s scenes were erotic while Kanbaru’s were more pornographic. The way I see it, porn involves something visual that shows off the body. Nadeko’s scenes were highly suggestive, but very little skin was shown. On the other hand, Kanbaru’s scenes seemed to have little to do with being erotic, but showed off a lot of skin, just like porn.
