Well, the past weekend and week ended up being extremely busy for me and I didn’t manage to come up with a single post. So here, I shall try to catch up on episode 17 & 18 of Mawaru Penguindrum. It was certainly a grand, varied build-up with a sorrowful end that has the Takakura family and Ringo bonding.

The past two episodes of Mawaru Penguindrum have become very intriguing, focusing on Yuri’s and Masako’s background. What I noticed is that there seems to be a heavy art theme in these episodes, with Yuri’s background involving sculptures and divine beauty. Masako’s background, however, invokes surrealism for me with all the elements of this art movement present in this episode in one way or another. Here, we shall examine the elements of this episode that led me to believe that this episode is heavily surreal-themed, though one element, non sequitur, is more prominent here and I will explain this element more in-depth than the other elements of surrealism.
With the latest episode, we now have a new nice opening. There have been some new changes, with Momoka being in it briefly. Of course, the OP still hides the mysteries of Mawaru Penguindrum, but we can be sure that Momoka and her diary will become even more central and integral to the series from here on. But, here in this post I shall briefly share my thoughts on a different theme: beauty.
Welp. Her name really should have been obvious to me, being a great lover of yuri. But, holy moly, this episode pushed most of my buttons in alluring ways, and this was one great episode! Unfortunately, I do not have much to say about any symbolic moments in this particular episode, nor do I have anything to add to the theories surrounding Mawaru Penguindrum. I’ve been very busy lately with planning two college events, helping my students to review for an upcoming midterm, studying for my own midterms, reading and doing research, and writing papers. That’s why I haven’t been on Twitter lately, and I haven’t the time to come up with a decent editorial the past weekend. So, here’s a short filler post filled with my various reactions to this episode, and it looks like I’ve unintentionally started doing Mawaru Penguindrum episodic posts now. 😛
Well, I’ve decided on impulse to immediately talk about episode 12 of Mawaru Penguindrum after watching it. The events that has transpired within this episode have been revealing, yet still not getting closer to the mystery that is the Penguindrum. However, I would like to point out one core theme of this episode, or rather, the allusion to a famous nursery rhyme that we all surely are familiar with, Mary Had a Little Lamb, along with several other references. SPOILERS WARNING AHEAD!
